I think PDF can only use OpenType fonts as a source of glyphs, which
can be embedded in the PDF as Type 1 (PostScript) or or Type 42
(TrueType) outlines. The "interesting" parts of OpenType (the
various advanced layout tables) have to be parsed and used by the
typesetter.
