While generating a PDF scatterplot of ~20000 circles, my LWW 4.3.7 went
belly up:

I'm using cl-pdf-2.1 and the PDF::COMPRESS-STRING defined in 
contrib/zlib-lw.lisp.  According to the backtrace, it looks like I hit an 
internal upper limit in LWW 4.3.7.  To get around the problem, I hacked 
WRITE-OBJECT in pdf.lisp a bit:

ps. after a bit of testing, i think the longest string that lww 4.3.7 can
    handle is between 2000000 and 2100000.  generating a scatterplot of
    ~20000 circles in pdf produces a string of length 4433794, which 
    can be happily handled by the cmucl version of cl-pdf without having
    to resort to the above hack.

Unfortunately, it's a know problem of LWW. Another generally even more
anoying one is the limitation of the strings at 8M. :(
This is a problem when one wants to generate a pdf file in memory (in a web
server for instance)

I've already asked Xanalys about this but feel free to ask too so that they
think it's a popular request.

Another possibility would be to change the way the coordonates are writen in
the pdf stream. So far I've put 3 digits after the dot but this could be
changed for your application.

The circle function uses besier and there are 6 numbers so the savings can
be significant:

  I'm afraid that I won't have time to improve this anytime soon. I
  think the idea of using classes to represent different types of
  destinations is good, but after having written it I realized that my
  serialization code was much more complicated than necessary (I

Hi!

Attached is a tiny patch to make CL-PDF easier to use on Windows. The
zlib library will be searched in the CL-PDF directory itself as well
as (in the case of LispWorks) the library where the image was
started. Also, the name "zlib1" is tried in addition to "libz" because
that's how the binary DLL provided by the GnuWin32 project is
called. Works for me with LW 4.3.7.

BTW, has anyone used CL-PDF with AllegroCL on Windows? For me (6.2
trial) it only works if I disable compression by setting
*MIN-SIZE-FOR-COMPRESSION* to a very high value. Otherwise, Acrobat
Reader (6.0.2) can't read the files. There seems to be an issue with
external formats but I don't have the time to investigate this.

It seems that it is supposed to be possible to give a format string
for the values on the y axis when creating a histogram instance like
so:

(make-instance 'pdf:histogram ...
               :y-axis-options '(:format-string "foo! ~A"))

However, first of all this slot will never be set because there is no
initarg for it in the class value-axis. Secondly, even if it was, it
would be unconditionally clobbered in the compute-scale function.

Below is a patch to chart.lisp with a suggested modification which
remedies both problems.

Yes, just use the "Symbol" font and look at the *symbol-encoding* in
encodings.lisp. (code-char 97) should give you "alpha". If you need more
math symbols, just use a TeX math font for instance.

Have you tried the ACL zlib binding in the contrib directory ?
The external format for Allegro has changed several times. Maybe you can try
an older one or disable the binary writing.
BTW to disable the compression it's better to put *compress-streams* to nil.

Ok, but I need to mix greek letters with both regular text and
numbers. One legend entry might say:

  Foo/Bar, \theta = 0,4; \kappa = 4,0

for instance.

If you have an example of this to point me to, or can tell me a little
bit more about how to do it, it would be most appreciated. I will
start looking at it now that I know it is at least possible though.

Something is wrong, and I cannot figure out what. The simple test case
below prints the expected when the font is "Helvetica", but when the
font is "Symbol", the page is blank:

The Symbol font is one of the 14 PDF builtin fonts so it should be there.
Does anybody have the same problem ? (Well if the messages go to through the

Ah. I am using xpdf to view PDFs, and there it came up blank. But now
when I tried acroread it showed up both in your file and
mine. However, when I print it in the normal way it came up blank, so
there is something fishy going on. (Everything else I have done so far
using cl-pdf/typesetting, I can view with xpdf and print with no
problems.) This seems to be a font issue I guess.

This example works for me. Look at the attached foo.pdf

The font got encoded as WinAnsiEncoding by default which appears to be
invalid.

Try this:

  (pdf:with-document ()
    (pdf:with-page ()
      (let ((font (pdf:get-font "Symbol" pdf::*standard-encoding*)))
        (pdf:in-text-mode
          (pdf:set-font font 36.0)
          (pdf:move-text 100 800)
          (pdf:draw-text "abcdefghABCDEFGH"))))
    (pdf:write-document "foo.pdf"))

Oops, that didn't work. This one works for acroread, xpdf, and
ghostscript:

  (pdf:with-document ()
    (pdf:with-page ()
      (let ((font (pdf:get-font "Symbol" nil)))
        (pdf:in-text-mode
          (pdf:set-font font 36.0)
          (pdf:move-text 100 800)
          (pdf:draw-text "abcdefghABCDEFGH"))))
    (pdf:write-document "foo.pdf"))

Now the encoding gets listed as "built-in" by acroread in the "properties
-> fonts" menu, as opposed to the "Windows" default encoding.

cl-pdf does not do this kind of stuff directly. You should use
cl-typesetting.
Making a legend with cl-typesetting is easy, I added #'colored-box for this.
