The Boston Lisp Meetings are BACK!

On Thursday, May 17th 2012, Zach Beane will come present us Quicklisp.
We'll meet at 17:30 at MIT 32-D463, the Star room at the Stata Center,
courtesy of Professor Gerry Sussman.

Two slots are available for lightning talkers, though I will gladly
take one of them if there aren't enough candidates.

I'll send an official announcement when I have a bit more information.

I don't know if this will be possible at this particular venue, but if
you're planning to come, what do you think of a plan whereby we order
a lot of pizza to eat on the spot, available for who pays a fee of say
$10? Another plan is for those who are interested to invade Mary Chung
after the meeting.

Also, I'm looking for someone interested in recording the event and
taking responsibility for actually posting each of the talks on one of
the usual sites. Any taker?

Finally, I'm always looking for speakers. Are you interested in
speaking? Do you know anyone who is interested or interesting?

PS: Sorry, no conference and meeting for April.
I didn't try hard enough early enough for it to happen.
However, if enough of you are interested,
we can meet, say on April 19th, and have a dinner at Mary Chung or the CBC.
Respond on the list if that tempts you.
Of course, a co-organizer would be great for times I'm failing...

Allow me to confirm that I'll attend, and to introduce myself.  I've 
just moved to the area.  Professionally I'm a statistician working at 
Novartis.  Lisp-wise, I've been learning Lisp for the last several 
years; I think I've mastered the beginning level and have run into 
difficulty with system- and implementation-specific stuff.  I look 
forward to meeting you all.

I am with you in spirit.  Wish I could come, but with trips (from to Williamsport PA) to DC on Tuesday, Philly yesterday, and Ohio tomorrow, I can't make a trip to Boston today, because I have an important meeting at work.

Yesterday evening I met ESR for the first time, at a Philly JUG meeting.  I have known RMS for 28 years, but I had never met ESR.  Anyway, one of the things he said was that Lisp is still a language in his head that has never been displaced ("in its adhesive power to your brain") by any other language in terms of its power.  Once, a long time ago, as a programmer capable in two languages he loved, APL and Lisp, he tried to write a Lisp interpreter in APL, and an APL interpreter in Lisp.  He said, "You can guess which won."

However he also said his current favorite language is Python, because when he writes programs in Python, six months later he can read the code and understand what it does, and that is most important to him.

Quicklisp is a library manager for Common Lisp. It works with your existing
Common Lisp implementation to download, install, and load any of over 700

Zach Beane, also known as Xach, is a Common Lisp hacker known for the cool toys
he builds and his "just do it" attitude.

At every meeting, before the main talk, there are two slots for strictly timed
